Summer House MV

In August 2023, a producer from the Bravo TV show ‘Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard’ reached out to me about a mural project for the show.  They were in need of aerosol art, and they’d heard of Island Spray through the Vineyard grapevine.

Initially they just wanted me to paint a large sign / ‘temporary mural’ for an episode in which the show’s star, DJ Jordy Jor, was throwing a Freaknik-themed house party.

After discussing ideas, Jordy and I decided that in addition to the Freaknik sign, it would be cool to have Island Spray at the party, airbrushing trucker hats live during the show.

I drove my 2001 Tacoma over to the house and did the party, mic’d up in case we had any funny conversations while painting.  Jordy’s Freaknik was super fun — the cast was really friendly, and the behind-the-scenes crew was amazing. Big thanks to Jordy, Arlynn, Mary Liz and the whole squad.  Fifteen minutes seconds of fame!

I spray painted the Freaknik sign in my yard.  The Taco was having muffler issues so I pulled up to Summer House extra loud.

I prepared a few Freaknik tees and hoodies beforehand in my basement to pass out to the cast.

Good thing I painted a crewneck sweatshirt – it was actually super cold that night, and Jordy sported the crew for much of the party!

The Hoochie Mama Punch sign was set up over by the poolside DJ booth.  They didn’t have an outdoor table, so they used one of mine for the punch bowl.  The Freaknik sign wound up being the backdrop for much of the episode’s hot tub shenanigans.

I wound up doing hats for the whole cast that night.  The airbrush really went with the 90s party theme, people were hyped!

Simon – the German boyfriend of one of the show’s main personalities – showed up straight off the plane from Europe.  He paid for his hat in Euros.  Afterwards we all went inside, where much drama ensued.

Amazing experience!  I had never been involved in a production like that before – it was eye-opening to see how the reality TV process works.  Pretty haphazard honestly!  While lots of planning and scripting was involved, there was also a big element of random occurrence that took me by surprise.

After Jordy’s Freaknik, the crew kept hitting me up for more airbrush gear.  One of the producers, Zach, came by an event I did the next weekend an ordered more hats .. the rest I finished in my studio and delivered to Summer House.

Big thanks to everyone involved, and especially to Arlynn, superstar producer of SHMV2 !  Bring it back for Season 3 !!
