Airbrush
In addition to live airbrush events with Island Spray, I’ve also done a number of collaborative projects with skate brands using my airbrush art. Here are some of the highlights ..
This first one was pretty epic – an airbrush for a collab capsule between Alltimers and Bronze 56k. The Timers logo is a martini glass, which worked out nicely with the shape of the Bronze screw.
Another Alltimers project were these boards for Alexis Sablone and Will Marshall. Alexis’s was of particular personal significance to me, since I grew up watching her classic part in the PJ Ladd video.
This Will Marshall board started out with the concept of combining a phrase he was apparently hyped on at the time – ‘open up a can of whoop a$$’ – and his favorite photo of his friend falling on his face. It wound up just being the can of whoop a$$, but I still love the alternate version shown here.
Through my friend Andre Page (who was the creative director of Zoo York when I was an intern there in 2009!) I connected with Tyshawn Jones to do a couple airbrush designs for his company King.
This is an unreleased board graphic for Caleb Barnett .. maybe it’ll come out someday ..
Tyshawn also does Hardies Hardware. This flip on the Georgetown bulldog felt pretty aligned with the brand.
On a trip to Maine in the fall of 2023 I stopped by the town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where I visited the local skateshop, Coureur Goods. I got to chatting with the owner Ian, and it turned out that we had a lot in common, including years spent in Boston (although we didn’t overlap in our time there). Ian suggested that we do a project together, and we brewed this design up for the following Spring’s line of shop t-shirts:
Did this one for New York-based online skate zine Village Psychic in celebration of their ten year anniversary:
It was given away to their Patreon supporters, and the back graphic left space for all the subscribers’ names to be printed on the computer screen.
And since I grew up in Minnesota, these ones are extra special for me — tees for Familia Skate Shop in Minneapolis. Full circle back to my Camp Snoopy airbrush roots!
This one’s a mashup of Minnesota team logos (the F is the classic Familia script lettering):
Cherry on a Spoon, the Claes Oldenburg classic at the Walker Art Center Sculpture Garden:
And the Familia Script logo, originally drawn by local legend Todd Bratrud, rendered in airbrush form.
